Introduction: Structural Architectures in Metal Filtration
Not all metallic filter elements serve the same functional purpose. Industrial filtration engineers must navigate three primary structural architectures: Sintered Wire Mesh, Sintered Porous Powder, and Wedge Wire (Slot Screen).Selecting the wrong topology leads to premature clogging, excessive pressure drop, or mechanical failure
Structural Comparison Matrix
| Filter Architecture | Micron Rating Range | Filtration Mechanism | Backwash / Cleanability | Primary Application Areas |
| Sintered Wire Mesh | 1 µm – 200 µm | Surface & Depth Filtration (Multi-layer bonded) | Excellent (Sonic & Reverse Flow) | High-temperature gas, polymer melt, hydraulic oil, steam. |
| Sintered Metal Powder | 0.2 µm – 50 µm | Tortuous Path Depth Filtration | Moderate (Chemical CIP & Ultrasonic) | Catalyst recovery, sparging, ultra pure gas, chemical slurry. |
| Wedge Wire / Screen | 20 µm – 3000 µm | Continuous Slot Surface Filtration | Superior (Mechanical Scraping & Backwash) | Wastewater treatment, pulp & paper, mining slurry, starch processing. |
1. Sintered Multi-Layer Wire Mesh: Versatile & Pleatable
Constructed by laminating 3 to 7 layers of stainless steel woven wire mesh (combining protective layers, filtration control layers, and structural support layers) and sintering them together under high temperature and vacuum. Because it can be pleated, it offers the highest surface area per cartridge volume.
2. Porous Sintered Metal Powder: Sub-Micron Tortuous Retention
Formed through cold isostatic pressing and high-temperature thermal fusion of micro-alloy powder beads. The resulting interconnected rigid pore structure delivers exceptional depth filtration, capable of capturing sub-micron contaminants at temperatures exceeding 600°C
3. Wedge Wire (V-Profile Slot Elements): Heavy Solids & Non-Clogging
Manufactured by wrapping continuous V-shaped profile wire around internal longitudinal support ribs. The two-point contact slot profile prevents particle entrapment, making it the industry standard for high-viscosity, high-solids applications with automatic scraping systems.
